Timely Warning

Rhodes College Campus Safety and Institutional Equity are investigating a reported hate crime of intimidation based on racial bias. Writings were found near the NPHC monument on Saturday, November 30, 2024, that contained profanity and a racial slur. There are currently no suspects. This crime is currently unsolved and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident should call Campus Safety at 901-843-3880 or Institutional Equity 901-843-3354.

It was reported that shots were fired between two cars in the 2000 block of Jackson Ave. this afternoon November 10, 2024 about 1:10 p.m. There were no injuries reported. This location is near Rhodes College campus. The Memphis Police Department is actively working on the case, but there is no suspect information.

Hurricane Francine will move into the Midsouth tonight and Thursday likely as a tropical depression. Expect heavy rain and windy conditions along with the occasional thunderstorm.

Rhodes College Campus Safety has received reports of scam phone calls being made to parents of some of our student-athletes. This is a national scam that has occurred at institutions across the country.

Parents of several student-athletes have received scam calls from numbers ”spoofing” the Rhodes Campus Safety phone number. During these phone calls, the caller claims to be a Rhodes Campus Safety Officer and tells the parent that their son or daughter has been arrested for underage drinking or something similar and that money is needed to bail them out. They request immediate payment be made (via Venmo, bank transfer, or other electronic means) in order to release their son or daughter from custody.

Please be aware that Rhodes Campus Safety will never make a call to solicit money. If you receive such a call, it is fraudulent. Please report the call to Rhodes Campus Safety

It is not believed, at this point in time, that there has been a data breach as many student-athlete's media profiles contain the names of parents on the public website.

Information:

Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at approximately 1:43 a.m., a dark blue Dodge Challenger was stolen from the street on University Ave. near Spann Townhouses. This location is Rhodes College public property. The suspect fired a shot and demanded the keys from the vehicle owner who is a �������� employee.  No one was injured in the incident.  The Memphis Police Department is actively working on the case. The suspect, a male, arrived on foot and was last seen driving west on Tutwiler in the stolen vehicle.

I write to alert you to potential severe weather overnight tonight Wednesday, May 8, 2024.  issued a Tornado Watch until 3:00 a.m. May, 9, 2024, for Shelby County.

In the event of a tornado warning, civil defense sirens will sound, and you are advised to take appropriate shelter immediately. You should immediately move to the lowest floor or most interior part of your building. Avoid exterior walls, windows and doors. Put as many walls as you can between you and the outside. Cover yourself for safety.

As a reminder of , a TORNADO WATCH is issued when conditions are very favorable, and a tornado is possible in the near future. A TORNADO WARNING is issued when a tornado has been sighted, indicated by radar, or may strike in the vicinity of our area.  Nighttime tornados are particularly dangerous.

Please be advised that during inclement weather you should anticipate wet floors and stairwells. Please exercise caution when moving around in the buildings. 

When possible, Rhodes Campus Safety will send an emergency Rhodes Alert when a Tornado Warning is issued for campus. You will likely hear tornado sirens before a Rhodes Alert is issued. If possible, Rhodes Campus Safety will issue an all-clear when conditions allow.

SAFETY TIPS-Off Campus

• Lock your window and doors, set your alarm as you leave home.
• Take any value items (cash, iPad, laptop or medication) with you if no one is home for the summer.
• Burglaries increase during the holiday months of November and December.
• Review all CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) principles that could apply to your home.
• Keep an update on your neighborhood crime data at 
• Ask for vacation patrol from the Memphis Police Department. You can set these up by calling your local precincts.

The Memphis Police Department, is currently on the scene of an Armed Robbery of Mystery Tobacco and Vape that occurred about 7:30 P.M. at 651 N. McLean Blvd. This location is about one-half mile from the Rhodes College campus. Investigators with the Memphis Police Department are actively working on the case. Please avoid the area at this time. 

No one from Rhodes College was involved and there were no injuries. There is no suspect information. Campus Safety is open 24-7 at 901-843-3880

The Memphis Police Department issued a City Alert earlier today concerning a series of connected shooting scenes in south Memphis. 

Although the shootings are not near �������� we are sharing the information as a precaution. 

Multiple jurisdictions are actively searching for the suspect in a white 2016 Dodge Charger with TN tags BPT-4410.

Timely Warning

On Monday, February 5, 2024, Rhodes College Campus Safety received a report from a female student that she was sexually assaulted on February 2, 2024 in a residence hall on campus. The male student respondent is known by the reporter.

PREVENTION TIPS

No action or inaction by a crime survivor makes that person responsible for their victimization. Perpetrators are responsible for their crimes and their effects. The following suggestions may help reduce the possibility of experiencing such a crime, and/or may improve opportunities to receive prompt assistance.

• Sexual assault is a crime.
• Sexual assault does not just occur between strangers.
• Consent must be clear and unambiguous for each participant at every stage of a sexual encounter.
• The absence of "no" should not be understood to mean there is consent.
• A person who is asleep or mentally or physically incapacitated, either through the effect of drugs or alcohol or for any other reason, is not capable of giving valid consent.
• Keep beverages in your control. Don’t accept an open beverage from an unknown source or offered by a person that you do not trust.
• Look out for the wellbeing of friends who may be incapacitated. Don’t leave an impaired friend alone or with a stranger or untrusted acquaintance. If a friend needs help, call 911.
• Bystanders should try to be aware of their surroundings. If there are signs of a person in distress and it is safe to intervene, bystanders should make themselves known, offer assistance, and/or seek immediate help from police or security personnel.

According to the Memphis Police Department, a vehicle was stolen on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at 12:45 A.M. from the 700 block of N. McLean Blvd and another on Monday, January 29, 2024, at 7:00 A.M. from the 1900 block of N. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Memphis and surrounding areas starting January 14, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. cst to January 16, 2024 at 06:00 a.m. cst.

The Refectory will open at 08:00 a.m. on Monday morning January 15, 2024.
 

The �������� Senior Leadership and Emergency Operations Teams are meeting regularly to provide timely and up-to-date information. A decision on Tuesday's classes will be made once the severity of the storm and any hazardous conditions have been reviewed and assessed.
 

Travel during this storm will likely be difficult across parts of the Mid-South due to hazardous conditions. Any event modification or cancellations due to weather concerns will be sent via additional emails.

There is an increasing potential for a Winter storm to occur Monday and Tuesday. This storm is likely to include frozen precipitation and extended periods of below freezing temperatures.

Faculty, staff, and off-campus students should start preparing now. Here are a few suggestions to consider:

• Gather essentials, food, water, and layer clothing.                 
• Insulate water pipes and outside faucets.      
• Check household heat (be mindful of carbon monoxide).     
• Make sure your vehicle is fueled and topped with antifreeze.
• Open cabinets and/or drip water in sinks and tubs (especially on outside walls).

 On-campus students should:

• Dress in layers.
• Be mindful of frozen areas on sidewalks and falling limbs from snow/ice accumulation.
• Monitor your email for changes in classes, Refectory, Library, or BCLC hours.
• Report any issue with heating, water, or other items to Campus Safety 24/7 at 901-843-3880.
