The Department of Physics at Rhodes College combines formal class work with hands-on laboratory work and independent research to create not just future scientists, but future leaders in the scientific community.
We are lucky to count physicists, astronomers, engineers, physicians, teachers, computer scientists, lawyers, business people, and many others among our former students. Over the past 10 years, roughly 30% of our majors have pursued graduate study in engineering (see our ). Another 35% pursue graduate studies in other disciplines (including physics, astronomy, and medicine, among others).
Due to the smaller size of the college and the nature of the physics department, you will have the opportunity to be an integral participant in cutting-edge research. From studying the evolution of galaxies using data taken with the world鈥檚 most powerful space telescopes, simulating electrodynamic responses due to varying charge densities, using ultrasound to improve the detection of bone disease, to developing controlled motion of potential drug-delivering spheres with magnetic fields, you鈥瞝l be able to choose from an assortment of research experiences to bring physics even more alive for you.
